Forest Preserve

Nestled behind the W.T. Bland Public Library in Mount Dora, the new Forest Preserve is a beautiful 14-acre tract of long leaf pine forest in the heart of a residential area. It features a 400-foot boardwalk and 1-mile hiking trail (with actual elevation changes!). We saw a barred owl and marsh rabbit during our first hike. Well done, City of Mount Dora! Highly recommended!

The Trails at Hidden Waters

I did an early morning hike at Hidden Waters Preserve in Eustis on Memorial Day. Hidden Waters Preserve is one of my favorite hikes in Lake County for several reasons: 1) There’s actually some elevation here since it encompasses a sinkhole lake; 2) It’s shaded for the most part (unless you decide to hike the perimeter); 3) Many gopher tortoises live here (although I didn’t see any on this particular outing); 4) It’s easily accessible just off Highway 441; and 5) The hidden waters (if you can find them) are scenic and photo worthy. So, the next time you’re passing through Eustis with nothing to do, stop by Hidden Waters Preserve. You’ll be glad you did!

Lake Hiawatha Preserve

Looking for a place to enjoy the great outdoors in Clermont just minutes from downtown? Look no farther than Lake Hiawatha Preserve! Ideally located adjacent to Lake Hiawatha and Lake Minneola, 220-acre Lake Hiawatha Preserve features hiking and biking trails, picnic pavilion, two dog parks, a playground and plenty of shady trees to relax under and enjoy a good book. In addition, the Lake Minneola-Clermont Scenic Trail runs right through Lake Hiawatha Preserve. Check it out!

Hiking at Spring Hammock Preserve

The great thing about hiking during times such as these is that it is essentially a solitary pursuit. Of course, more and more people are discovering the awesome wonders of hiking these days, but if you get out there a little in the wilderness you will usually have acres and acres to explore by yourself. Therefore, I’ve been seeking out great places to hike such as Spring Hammock Preserve in Longwood. It’s an amazing place if you can find it!
