“May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view.” – Edward Abbey

What I’m Watching …
Big Sur (2013): Arguably the most successful film adaptation of any of Jack Kerouac’s novels to date, Big Sur was directed by Mark Polish and features amazing cinematography, solid acting and compelling voice-over narration such as “I was surrounded and outnumbered and had to get away to solitude again or die ” Eclectic cast includes Jean-Marc Barr, Josh Lucas, Radha Mitchell, Anthony Edwards, Stana Katic, Balthazar Getty, Kate Bosworth, Henry Thomas, Patrick Fischler and Jason W. Wong. Definitely not for all tastes!
Back to Bear Creek
Nestled amid a sprawling neighborhood in Winter Springs, Bear Creek Nature Trail is a real diamond in the rough! It’s a short but very scenic trail that’s worth seeking out.
Overlook Park
Nestled along scenic Lake Jesup in Oviedo, Overlook Park is a nice place to chill – if you can find it! There are no hiking trails here, but the view is excellent.
A Walk in the Woods
With apologies to Bill Bryson, I had a great hike at Econ River Wilderness Area in Oviedo yesterday. It was good to be back there! One of my favorite local hikes.
Wandering Hickory Point Park
Tucked in a far corner of Hickory Point Park, a huge recreational complex in Tavares, lies a very scenic boardwalk. Just follow the sidewalk that heads west of the playground to find it. You’ll be glad you did!
Sabal Bluff Preserve
Tucked behind a mobile home park in Leesburg, Sabal Bluff Preserve is hard to find, but well worth the effort. The Bourlay Trail takes you to the Lake Griffin Trail for some spectacular views. The entire trail system is just about 2 miles total, so you can knock it out in an hour or so. Keep an eye out for gopher tortoises (unfortunately, we didn’t see any this time out).
What I’m Reading …
“Rock simply should not be played by fifty-five-year-old men with triple chins wearing bad wighats, pretending still to be excited about playing songs they wrote thirty or thirty-five years ago and have played some thousands of times since. Its prime audience should not be middle-aged, balding, jelly-bellied dads who’ve brought along their wives and kids. It should not be trapped behind glass in a museum display and gawked at like remnants of a lost civilization. That is not rock ‘n’ roll. Rock ‘n’ roll is not family entertainment.”
Experience the REAL Florida
Billed as “Central Florida’s favorite watering hole,” Wekiva Island offers great outdoor recreation opportunities like kayaking along the scenic Wekiva River, as well as the ideal locale if you prefer to chill out, drink an ice-cold draft beer and casually watch the world drift by. It’s also the perfect place to take out-of-town guests who believe that Central Florida is nothing more than overpriced theme parks, chain restaurants and bland, cookie-cutter neighborhoods!
The Trails of Palm Island
I’ve visited Palm Island Park in Mount Dora dozens of times and I see something new with each visit. That’s why I encourage you to explore both the great boardwalk and the short but scenic network of trails. Enjoy your hike!
