On my way back from Orlando Wetlands Park yesterday, I enjoyed the opportunity of exploring Fort Christmas Historical Park. The highlight of the park is a replica of a fort built in 1837 during the Second Seminole Indian War. It’s full of some great informative exhibits. The premises also include a traditional Florida “cracker” house and some other historic structures that I didn’t have time to check out during this visit. Don’t miss it!

Return to Orlando Wetlands
This morning I returned to Orlando Wetlands Park in Christmas for the first time this year. It was sweltering hot and I saw a lot of birds, but only one gator. However, it was good to be back there! One of my favorite spots to view wildlife in Central Florida.
What I’m Watching …
“Without dreams we would be cows in a field and I don’t want to live like that. I live my life or I end my life with this project.” – Werner Herzog
Zaza New Cuban Diner
For authentic and delicious Cuban cuisine, I recommend Zaza New Cuban Diner. We visited the Altamonte Springs location, but there are also four other Zaza locales in Central Florida. Seek it out!
Wood Storks
As we wandered around Starke Lake in Ocoee yesterday, we enjoyed the pleasure of viewing two wood storks, a rare and welcome sight indeed!
Alice’s Pond
The other day we dropped by Mead Botanical Garden in Winter Park just so we could wander around Alice’s Pond and look for wildlife. We saw two turtles and a black racer with a frog in its mouth. Not a bad way to spend a lazy Saturday afternoon!
Greenwood Urban Wetland
The Greenwood Urban Wetland in Orlando lies adjacent to the historic Greenwood Cemetery. Take a nice stroll around the scenic lake and look for various wildlife along the way. We saw a turtle and a pileated woodpecker during our brief journey. Seek it out!
Lazy Moon Pizza
We finally got an opportunity to check out Lazy Moon Pizza in Orlando and had a great experience! The pizza slices are absolutely huge and delicious. We also sampled the hummus plate and caprese salad. They also have a nice craft beer selection. We visited the East Colonial Drive location just west of Mills Avenue. A second location can be found on University Boulevard near UCF. Highly recommended!
Yellow Caboose
An iconic bright yellow Caboose lies in front of the Heritage Museum in downtown Winter Garden. Very cool! Someday I’ll make it inside that museum. Looks interesting!
Mount Dora Wildlife
If you take a short stroll from bustling downtown Mount Dora, you can immerse yourself in wildlife at Palm Island Park and adjacent Grantham Pointe, both of which overlook scenic Lake Dora. I wandered around both spots yesterday right after an afternoon storm and had the place to myself. Enjoy your hike!
