Believe it or not, this is what Price Lake at MP 297 on the Blue Ridge Parkway looks like after the dam broke recently. Let’s hope the lake fills up again soon!
Year: 2021
Moses H. Cone Memorial Park
Although extensive renovations are underway at Flat Top Manor at Moses H. Cone Park (MP 294, Blue Ridge Parkway, you can still visit the Southern Highlands Craft Guild shop and wander along the many scenic trails. Don’t miss it!
Sims Pond Overlook
Another great place to stop along the Blue Ridge Parkway is the Sims Pond Overlook at MP 295.9. You can also pick up the Green Knob Loop Trail here.
Thunder Hill Overlook
A very popular scenic spot at MP 290.4 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Thunder Hill Overlook features nice mountain views from a trail that can be picked up across the Parkway from the parking area. A short hike will take you to the top of the hill where you will also see a variety of apple trees. Definitely worth a stop the next time you’re cruising the Parkway just north of Blowing Rock!
October
“I was going home in October. Everybody goes home in October.” – Jack Kerouac
Blowing Rock
We’re back in Blowing Rock for a brief getaway and the fall colors are popping!
Stay Close to Nature
“Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never failure you.” – Frank Lloyd Wright
The Florida Scene
“The salvation of the Florida scene will come about only if the public savors its beauty, understands its limitations, and speaks up for its preservation ” – Marjorie Harris Carr
Boardwalk
Our Sunday late afternoon ritual is to head out to Oakland Nature Preserve and take a stroll along the scenic boardwalk to Lake Apopka (about 1.5 miles roundtrip). It’s a great way to get some fresh air and relieve stress before another daunting workweek!
What I’m Reading …
Before you visit Savannah, I recommend you pick up a copy of Secret Savannah by Chris Berinato. This great guidebook led us to all of the “weird, wonderful and obscure” Savannah sites, many of which we would have missed otherwise! Some highlights of our recent visit that are featured in Secret Savannah include the old harbour light, Johnny Mercer statue, Waving Girl statue, Original Pinkie Masters, Abe’s on Lincoln, Moon River Brewing Company, Bonaventure Cemetery, Wormsloe State Historic Site, Graveface Museum, Colonial Park Cemetery, Book Lady Bookstore, Pirate’s House and Alex Raskin Antiques. Highly recommended!
