Flat Rock Trail
One of my favorite short hikes along the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina, the Flat Rock Trail is an easy, 0.6-mile self-guiding loop that takes hikers to an extensive rock summit that affords spectacular views of the surrounding area, including Linville Valley and Grandfather Mountain (when it is not shrouded by the clouds and fog!). Informational signs can be found along the journey that provide details about native plants, trees and geological features. The Flat Rock Trail parking overlook can be found at Milepost 308.3.
Seven Mile Bridge

An engineering masterpiece, the Seven Mile Bridge (which is actually 6.79 miles long) was constructed between 1979 and 1982 on the Overseas Highway at a cost of $45 million and serves to connect the Middle Keys (Marathon) to the Lower Keys (Little Duck Key). Each April, the bridge is closed for a couple of hours for the Seven Mile Bridge Run, an annual event that began in 1982. Movies filmed over the years in the vicinity of the bridge include True Lies, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Licence to Kill, Criss Cross and Up Close & Personal. Outlaw country music singer David Allan Coe wrote a song titled “Seven Mile Bridge.” The bridge, which replaced a much narrower roadway built atop the remains of Henry Flagler’s railroad bridge, can reportedly withstand winds of up to 200 miles per hour.
West Orange Trail – Forest Lake Golf Club
My favorite stretch of the West Orange Trail starts at the Ingram Outpost (Mile 11.8) and winds around the Forest Lake Golf Club. I would estimate it is about a 3-mile walk if you go from the outpost entirely around the outer perimeter of the golf course and back. I like this route because it is less crowded than many other segments of the trail. In fact, I rarely encounter any other walkers in the late afternoon and usually just a handful of cyclists. You may even find an errant golf ball or two along the way!
Wekiva Island
Want to “experience the real Florida”? Spend a day at Wekiva Island! Our ideal excursion to Wekiva Island involves getting there early in the morning before the crowds, renting kayaks or canoes, and paddling down the Wekiva River. Once we reach Wekiwa Springs State Park (a small admission fee is charged), we take a dip in the crystal-clear springs. Then we leisurely paddle back to Wekiva Island for juicy burgers and ice-cold beers. Wekiva Island features a scenic boardwalk, sand volleyball court, Without a Paddle Cafe, General Store and The Tooting Otter craft beer and wine bar. It’s a great place to take visitors when they need a welcome break from all the stresses associated with theme park exploration! Wekiva Island is located at 1014 Miami Springs Drive in Longwood. Hours are 8 AM to 7 PM Sunday through Thursday and 8 AM to 11 PM Friday and Saturday.
St. Augustine Lighthouse
Built in 1874, the 165-foot-tall St. Augustine Lighthouse features a quite daunting 219-step hike up to the observation deck for a spectacular view of the St. Augustine Historic District and St. Augustine Beach.
